There are key diiferences between travle and health insurance, most important among these are the circumstances under which the ploicyholder can make a claim, namely what is considered a medical emergency whilst overseas and what would be described as ongoing medical treatment within the policyholder's home country. Essentially, travel insurance can provide cover to help meet the costs of emergency medical treatment expenses that are otherwise payable as a result of an isolated and unexpected injury or illness experienced whilst travelling in another country or region. By comparison, health insurance can help the policyholder meet the costs of onging medical consultation and treatment for a condition, usually only within the policyholder's regular country of residence.

Travel insurance can be purchased up and on the day of departure, but it is usually not possible to purchase travel insurance to cover your whole trip after the trip has begun. It is important to consider that taking out travel insurance as a last minute purchase may prevent claims for pre-existing situations such as flight delays and cancellations which were announced or known prior to, or at the time of purchasing the travel insurance cover.

For this reason, the earier a traveller is able to purchae travel insurance, the better.
